Walnut – Papa New Guinea

Size of tree and type of forest/location: Large hardwoods growing in association with taun in lowland forests in Papa New Guinea but of limited availability. Also found in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines in small quantity.
Description of wood: Heartwood grey-brown, with streaks of darker brown. Sapwood creamy, to 100 mm wide. Texture moderately coarse but even. Grain often interlocked.
Dry density kg/m3: 540
Workability: Needs careful working because of the interlocked grain and the wood’s dulling effect on cutting edges.
Durability:
Use: Furniture, decorative veneer, panelling, turnery, carving.
Availability: Commercially available.
