Pine – Baltic

Size of tree and type of forest/location: A medium sized softwood widely distributed throughout Europe and northern Asia.
Description of wood: Sapwood creamy white or pale yellow, 50 to 100 mm wide and easily distinguishable from the yellow-brown to reddish brown heartwood. Texture relatively fine. Grain usually straight. Knots are usually grouped. Wood is resinous.
Dry density kg/m3: 500
Workability: Easy to work unless the small hard knots are numerous. Glues satisfactorily if very resinous material is exclude. Nails well.
Durability:
Use: General construction, flooring, panelling and interior joinery
Availability: Commercially available

Purple Heart
Size of tree and type of forest/location: Medium sized hardwoods of the northern part of South America
Description of wood: Heartwood brown when freshly cut but rapidly changing to a purple colour. Sapwood grey. Texture medium and even. Grain variable.
Dry density kg/m3: 880
Workability: Not easy to work. Needs pre-boring for nails. Fair for steam bending
Durability:
Use: Decorative veneer, turnery, marquetry, flooring, storage of chemicals, billiard cue butts.
Availability: Commercially available
